Originally imperial stouts were brewed in England for Catherine the Great of Russia. The style came into being in the same way as the IPA. The lower alcohol and lower hop content of traditional stouts did not travel well from England to the northern Baltic ports, so brewers increased the hops content and got the alcohol to about 7.5% and the Imperial Russian Stout was born. Today craft brewers will attach the "imperial" to ANY style with a higher alcohol content.
