Weiss or Wit or Wheat

Although the style originated in Belgium in the 1400s,wheat beers are now popular world-wide, especially in the warmer weather.  These beers are made with unmalted wheat in addition to malted barley and are usually left unfiltered for a "white" appearance.  The yeast used gives an orangey citrus flavor that is often enhanced with the addition of orange peel and coriander.  The crisp finish, lightness and fruitiness make this a very popular summer seasonal style.  A German summer favorite is the shandy, a mix of wheat beer and lemonade. Wheat beers are usually brewed with ale yeast.
