India Pale Ale
When India was a colony of Great Britain, the IPA was born. Getting ales and porters around Africa to India without spoiling was difficult. Long trip...no fridge. Hops and alcohol are natural preservatives and it wasn't long before the English found a way to get the beer there fresh and tasty.The older British versions are maltier to mask the higher alcohol content, but most of the American IPAs are higher in hops.
